Can
Alphans ride the horse of history?
The drift and gloom in our national life pose
a challenge to Alphans and raises the question:
Can we do something, anything to stem the tide
of history?
The
fraternity has in its muster roll world shakers
and movers, some of the most powerful minds in
the field of law, jurisprudence, banking, diplomacy,
statecraft, politics, business, finance, etc.
No other group has had among its members such
luminaries as Ambrosio Padilla, Greg Castillo,
Renato Constantino, Sonny Alvarez, Abraham Sarmiento,
Enrique Voltaire Garcia, Augusto Caesar Espiritu,
Rey Puno, Andy Gatmaitan, etc.
In
the darkest hours of our country's history, who
would rise to challenge the dictatorship or fight
the criminal and ignorant leadership? Abraham
Sarmiento, Heherson T. Alvarez!
Yet has the Nation heard of the Alpha Phi Beta
Fraternity as a wielder of influence and power?
As a force to reckon with? When EDSA II erupted,
only the banner of APB could be seen among the
throngs from the University of the Philippines
that went there. But you read through the chronicles
of that event, you will not find our name nor
any reference to us.
Perhaps
it is time we consciously project the APB into
the stream of national events. It is time we force
into the thinking processes of those of us who
are in position of power and influence to systematically
have members of the fraternity installed in sensitive
levers of politics, business, industry, media,
and other spheres.
The
cross currents of great events are gathering strength.
Upheaval may not be far off. Alphans should be
at the ready as we approach another axial point
of history. God willing, many Alphans may again
be catapulted into pivotal positions of influence
and power.
These
could be Sonny or Bobby or Joey or Oca. May they
not forget their roots in our brotherhood. And
may they seize the day and bring the fraternity
with them in the theater of power. Power for good.
Power for the salvation of this benighted land.
